Ethereal Openers & Electrifying moments: Lauren Mayberry at District Music Hall
Reviewed for The Concert Chronicles. Original article here.
Artists like Lauren Mayberry take the stage and instantly remind you why live music is magic. At District Music Hall in Norwalk, Connecticut, Mayberry brought an electrifying set from her debut solo album, Vicious Creature. Known for her work fronting CHVRCHES, her solo tour is a masterclass in reinvention from an artist stepping into her own spotlight.
Before Mayberry shined on stage, Cult of Venus mesmerized the crowd with a pulsing, otherworldly set. With glitchy beats, hypnotic vocals, and a raw edge, she blurred the lines between human and digital, heart and circuitry. Very much a spellbinding opening for Lauren Mayberry.
From the moment she walked on stage, Lauren Mayberry radiated a different kind of energy than fans might expect from CHVRCHES. Her stage presence is undeniable — equal parts fierce and playful, almost cathartic with songs like “Something in the Air” and “Punch Drunk.” The music still has that signature emotional depth, but now it feels stripped down — less gloss, more grit.
Mayberry’s presence is raw and unfiltered, a beautiful contradiction of power and fragility, chaos and control. “Sorry, Etc.” hits you with a visceral punch, as she moved across the stage like an angry thunderstorm, strobe lights firing. In contrast, “Oh, Mother” presented a moment for her storytelling to shine in a way that felt almost confessional.
Lauren Mayberry’s solo career is the kind of artistic leap that feels both unexpected and inevitable. It’s a natural progression, a chance to explore new creative territory while staying true to the emotional core that’s always made her music resonate.
The @ryanreid.sound Check: Lauren Mayberry’s performance at District Music Hall was mercurial, untamed, and electric! If you missed her on tour this spring, be sure to add Vicious Creature to your playlist, or better yet – directly support the artist and buy a vinyl! As for Cult of Venus? Keep an eye on them. They’re the kind of act that doesn’t stay an opener for long.
